How I Lost My Dad to Low Blood Pressure—Now, My Mom Has It

On Wednesday, 08 September 2021, I rushed my mom to the hospital. The doctor confirmed she had hypotension, 85/60. I freaked out — exactly thesame scenario that played out in 2016 when I lost my father.

Low blood pressure is known as hypotension. With each beating, your blood presses against your arteries. Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood on the arterial walls.

Low blood pressure might make you feel fatigued or dizzy at times. Hypotension might be a symptom of an underlying ailment that has to be addressed in certain situations.

At some point in your life, your blood pressure can decrease. It also doesn’t always come in the form of symptoms. If left untreated, certain disorders can induce extended bouts of hypotension, which can be dangerous.

If you’re experiencing symptoms like these:

  1. Dizziness or lightheadedness
  2. Clouded vision (especially when you stand up), or feeling sick
  3. An overall sensation of weakness, disorientation, and fainting
